Bible.is Bible App: 96 Languages, 160 Versions, and Counting!

iPhone screenshotsToday we’re happy to announce 96 languages and 160 versions available in the Bible.is suite of applications. The text and audio experience of Bible.is touches the lives of hundreds of thousands of users, and we can’t wait to see that experience extend to more people.

Grab the free Bible app for iPhone or Android and listen to God speak in the heart language of people around the world. Hear languages like Ilocano, spoken by over 9 million people in the Luzon region of the Philippines. Or Sisaala Tumulung, spoken in Ghana and Burkina Faso. All around the world, people are reading and listening to the Bible, right from their mobile phones.

We’re carrying forward the mission of Faith Comes By Hearing, the makers of Bible.is, to “reach and disciple the world’s poor and illiterate people with the Word of God in audio.” Join us in this mission by telling friends about the mission and about the apps. Yes, we’re excited today and for those of us in English-speaking countries. We also know that internet connectivity and smart mobile devices are going to be everywhere soon, and we want people to have access to the Bible in a format their heart can understand. 96 languages is the most of any application available for iPhone and Android, but we won’t stop until all languages are available.

Thanks to the efforts of our Bible.is team, as well as feedback from lots of users about which languages they’d like to listen to inside our apps, the Bible.is bible app for iPhone now has over 55 languages–and more are coming!

The first time I listened to some of these languages, I was overwhelmed. Each recording is done using native speakers, and you get a sense of how important it is for people to hear the Word of God in their heart language.

Bible.is and all the languages it offers will always be free as part of Faith Comes By Hearing’s desire to reach the entire world with the Word of God in audio. How cool is that?

Control your Bible experience just like your iPod music!

Our latest release of Bible.is for iPhone makes it even easier to read, listen to, and share the Scriptures. I’ve been using the updated app for a few hours now on my 3GS, and I must say, the complete background audio support is wonderful. Grab Version 1.2 from iTunes, and read on to see what’s inside.

Complete iOS 4 multitasking support (3GS and iPhone 4 only)
  • Now you can press play in Bible.is, exit the app, and use iPhone’s built-in multitasking controls to change chapters, pause/play, and get back into the app with just a swipe and a tap.
  • When you come back to the app, you see the text for the audio you’re listening to.
  • Audio automatically advances to the next chapter, so you can listen to Psalm after Psalm or go through all your daily Program chapters.
  • If your phone has gone into Sleep Mode, just wake it up, double tap the home button, and navigate around the Bible just as you would a song on your iPod.
Complete Retina Display support (iPhone 4 only)
  • You iPhone 4 users now have stunning Retina Display graphics to enjoy throughout the app.
Improved animations
  • Transitions between Interface View and Full Screen View are seamless, making for the smoothest reading & listening experience yet.
Improved text experience
  • The default translation, English Standard Version, has been improved in the areas of punctuation and spacing.
User interface enhancements
  • Now you can just hit the Back button from the interface screen to view the other versions and languages available to you. No more going to More/Settings/Language to change your translation
